Can You Get a False-Positive Pregnancy Test Result?

Seeing a positive pregnancy test can feel overwhelming, especially when you weren’t expecting it. You may find yourself questioning the result and wondering whether it’s truly accurate.

At Life Center, we offer free self-administered pregnancy tests in a supportive environment where you’ll get the answers and information you need. Schedule an appointment today to get clarity and take your next step.

What Does a False-Positive Mean?

A false-positive pregnancy test happens when a test shows a positive result even though there isn’t an ongoing pregnancy. Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is typically present when a pregnancy begins.

In most cases, a positive result is accurate. However, there are situations in which hCG may still be present in the body for reasons other than pregnancy, which can lead to confusion. That’s why it’s important not to rely on a single test alone for answers.

When a Positive Result Might Be Misleading

One of the most common reasons for a false-positive result is an early pregnancy loss, also called a chemical pregnancy. Sometimes a fertilized egg implants and begins producing hCG, but the pregnancy stops developing shortly afterward. Because the hormone can remain in your body for a short time, a test may still show positive even though the pregnancy is no longer progressing.

Other, less common factors can also affect results. Certain medications, especially those used in fertility treatments, may contain hCG and influence a test. Hormonal changes related to perimenopause or menopause, or certain ovarian conditions, can occasionally play a role as well.

Why Follow-Up Matters

If you’ve received a positive result and feel unsure, getting additional information can help bring peace of mind. At Life Center, we offer self-administered pregnancy tests in a comfortable setting, along with a support team ready to talk through your results.

If your test is positive, we can provide ultrasound referrals to confirm critical information about your pregnancy and health. An ultrasound is the only way to determine whether a pregnancy is developing, how far along you are, and whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus.

In the event of a positive pregnancy test, we can also provide financial assistance that can help you. However, to qualify for financial assistance, please come in to speak with us.

You’re Not Alone

An unexpected result can bring a mix of emotions, including confusion, fear, or even disbelief. You don’t have to process this on your own. Our support team is here to listen, answer questions, and walk with you through what comes next.

We also offer referrals for licensed counselors if you’d like additional emotional support during this time.

Schedule your appointment today to confirm your results and decide what comes next.
