How Does Taking a Pregnancy Test at Different Times of Day Affect the Result?

Although pregnancy tests generally provide accurate results, some factors can lead to a false-negative. To gain the most precise reading, pregnancy tests should be taken in the morning.

Life Center offers free pregnancy testing, so you can get the most accurate results reviewed by professionals. Contact us to make your appointment today.

How Pregnancy Tests Detect Pregnancy

Pregnancy tests function by detecting the presence of hCG, a hormone your body produces once a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, about six to ten days after conception. Depending on when you ovulated and when you test, the level of hCG can vary.

Most at-home pregnancy tests use a urine sample and are highly accurate when used correctly. However, testing too early can lead to a false-negative result because your hCG levels may not yet be high enough to be detected.

The FDA recommends testing one to two weeks after you miss your period for the most accurate results.

Why You Should Test In The Morning

After you miss your period, the best time to take a pregnancy test for the most accurate result is in the morning, using your first urine. This is when hCG levels are typically most concentrated, since your body has had several hours to build up the hormone overnight without fluids diluting it or urination reducing its concentration.

Testing later in the day (such as in the afternoon or evening) can sometimes result in lower hCG levels in your urine, which may increase the chance of a false negative, especially in early pregnancy.

When combined, these steps can help you get a clearer, more dependable pregnancy test result.
