You Can Continue Your Education

An unexpected pregnancy can make you question your ability to continue school and pursue your goals. What’s more, you might wonder what your loved ones and classmates think, making this situation challenging.

First, know that you can continue your education and don’t necessarily have to put your dreams on hold during this time. Learning your rights as a student and what’s available to help you succeed is essential.

You Have Rights

You are protected under Title IX when pregnant (and if you choose to parent). Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prevents discrimination based on sex, and because of this law, you are protected.

This law establishes your ability to:

  • Continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities
  • Receive reasonable adjustments (a larger desk, more frequent restroom visits, etc.)
  • Utilize excused absences due to pregnancy or childbirth for as long as your doctor says is necessary
  • Return to the same academic standing you held before your medical leave began

Any school receiving federal funds must comply with this law, and you have the right to receive the assistance you need.

Navigating Your Situation

Being pregnant while in school can create some fear and anxiety. However, support systems are available to help you make confident decisions.

Know that you alone have the right to make a pregnancy decision. Your parents cannot decide for you, even if you’re a minor.

Sharing the news with family and friends can be challenging, especially if they have imagined a specific life path for you. Remember that reactions like fear and disappointment, while challenging to navigate, are natural. Giving them time to process the news can be helpful.

Once you’ve confirmed your pregnancy, you can look into your options. The Life Center will provide accurate information on abortion, adoption, and parenting. This is your choice, and even if you feel completely alone, know that we are here with you.

You Are Not Alone

Knowing where to begin can be difficult. However, you are more capable than you realize, and resources are available to help you succeed.

This is not the end of the road. Make a free and confidential appointment to learn how our support team can help.
