Woman wondering if she's pregnant

Could I Be Pregnant and Not Know It?

It might sound surprising, but yes, some women can be several weeks into pregnancy without realizing it. While most women find out between 4 and 12 weeks, some don’t notice the signs right away or misread them as something else.

Whether you’re unsure because of irregular cycles or just feeling “off,” it’s worth looking into. Pregnancy symptoms can vary widely, and in rare cases, women can carry into the second trimester, or even later, without knowing.

What Is a Hidden (Cryptic) Pregnancy?

A hidden, or “cryptic,” pregnancy happens when a woman doesn’t realize she’s pregnant for weeks or even months. This can happen for a variety of reasons:

  • Irregular periods that mask a missed cycle
  • Light spotting that’s mistaken for a period
  • Pregnancy symptoms that feel like something else (fatigue, stress, etc.)
  • No noticeable pregnancy bump
  • Assuming pregnancy isn’t possible due to health conditions, age, or birth control use

Though rare, these situations are real. 1 in 475 pregnancies go unnoticed until about 20 weeks into pregnancy, which is in the second trimester. That’s why it’s important to listen to your body and take steps to find out for sure.
