How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

Taking a pregnancy test is the first step to learning more about your situation and finding a path forward. Whether you’ve already taken an at-home test or haven’t tested yet, we’ll help you receive that initial answer.

All pregnancy tests, whether blood or urine-based, detect hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). After the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, the placenta begins producing this hormone.

Determining when to take a pregnancy test can be challenging. The Life Center will help you consider timing to get an accurate result.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test?

Many women decide to test for pregnancy when they start having symptoms or have recently had sexual intercourse. However, symptoms alone don’t mean you’re pregnant. Signs like a missed period or fatigue can come from hormonal imbalances, other health conditions, and weight changes.

If you do experience pregnancy symptoms, here are some you might notice:

  • Missed period
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Nasal congestion
  • Food aversions
  • Moodiness

If you suspect you might be pregnant, it’s best to wait at least a few days after a missed period or several weeks after sexual intercourse to take a test. The amount of hCG in your blood and urine doubles every two to three days, and waiting means you’re more likely to receive an accurate result.

Testing first thing in the morning is ideal because your urine will be at its most concentrated. If you are taking an at-home test, be sure to read the instructions carefully.

What If My Pregnancy Test Comes Back Positive?

Receiving a positive pregnancy test might confirm what you were wondering or be a complete shock. If you have a positive result, take a deep breath. You’ll be able to get the information needed to move forward.

The Life Center provides free, self-administered pregnancy tests. If your test is positive, we’ll discuss receiving an ultrasound referral to confirm your pregnancy and help determine the next steps.

Though this moment can feel frightening, you are not alone. Schedule a confidential appointment today.
