What Are My Other Options?

For some women, the emotional pain of an abortion is too much to endure. You don’t want to have another abortion, but you don’t feel prepared to parent. So what is your option? Consider making an adoption plan.

Making an Adoption Plan

Choosing to place your child for adoption is difficult, but you have the opportunity to build a relationship as they grow. Adoption can be the most loving option but also the most painful because of that love.

As the birth mother, you are in complete control of the adoption process. When you work with a reputable adoption coordinator, such as an adoption agency, you receive thorough counseling before making any decision.

Once you’ve determined making an adoption plan is best, the agency will show you bios of couples waiting to adopt. You select the family and the future you want for your child.

Do you want your child to be raised in the city or on a farm? Should they have immediate siblings or be the oldest? By selecting the perfect couple, you are shaping your child’s life.

You also select the adoption plan. The plan you choose is based on the amount of contact you want with your child and their adoptive family. There are three basic plans:

  • Open Adoption
Research has found that an open adoption plan is beneficial for everyone. You establish a Contact Agreement with the adoptive family and stay connected through letters, emails, phone calls, and visits.
  • Semi-Open Adoption
You remain in contact with the adoptive family and your child, but a third party, such as your adoption agency, handles all communication. It helps maintain privacy.
  • Closed Adoption
There is no contact between you and the adoptive family or your child. The courts seal the original birth certificate, and you remain entirely anonymous.

No one should ever coerce you into choosing adoption. Make sure you are informed about your decision. Choose an adoption agency that provides counseling. Many agencies offer 24/7 helplines to answer your questions and provide the comfort and counsel you need.

What If I Want to Parent?

If you are considering parenting your child, we understand how overwhelming it might feel. You worry about finances, a place to live, physical and emotional health, and your job or schooling. There is a lot to take into consideration.

The good news is many agencies are ready and available to help you parent successfully. At Life Center, we offer parenting classes, material help, and emotional support. All of our classes are free, and by taking a class, you earn the opportunity to “shop” in our baby boutique.

Being a parent is both stressful and rewarding. But being unplanned doesn’t mean impossible. If you have determination and love, you will be a success.
